Happy New Year! For our family, the Eve is ignored in favour of a celebration on New Year’s Day for our eldest child – who turned 6 today!
Husband and I always stay up too late the night before, packing away some of Christmas and putting up balloons and birthday decorations.
I must admit, late in this house is anything past 10:30pm…and I was woken at midnight by very loud fireworks going off all around our house. We live at the top of a hill, and we back onto a valley so the sky was lighting up all over. Anyway, I climbed back into bed and whispered “Happy new year” into the silence and went back to sleep!
I was awoken around 4 or 5am by eldest child “Mummy is it morning-time yet?” “Can I play on your phone”
Dear God child! Go back to sleep it is definitely not morning-time yet!
Anyway, she woke and started bouncing at the much more considerate hour of 6:30am and we had a quick bedroom dance party before running downstairs to open presents and start the birthday.
There were the usual big feels over presents and some down time on screens was needed throughout the day, but overall it was a lovely one, that I will look back on fondly.
In previous years I have felt very nostalgic for that tiny baby who made me a mother, but this year I’m so excited for the person she is now, and the person she is growing into. She’s caring, sensitive, deeply feeling, but resilient, strong, friendly and confident too. I love her with every fibre of my being.
We have fun together, little inside jokes and our own little language that we use to communicate over the top of little sister’s head, and if I’m feeling cheeky, behind Daddy’s back too.
We had lots of family and friends to visit and celebrate our girl today, in varying states of hangover or post-Christmas slump. We served nibbles, tea, cake and some glasses of fizz. My auntie is a very talented baker and made a beautiful cake which we are going to bring to The Birthday Party in a day or so. It was a lot of fun and we will all go to bed happy this evening.
Happy 6th birthday, little one!
